“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” Colossians 3:12-14, ESV
At Light, we believe that what God is doing in the world does not end with individuals coming back into a right relationship with Him (though it includes that!). Rather, what God is doing in the world today is calling individuals out of every people group and every country and forming them together into a new identity; a new people who do not withdraw from their cultures, but rather influence the culture around them for God’s glory.
Church is, at it’s core, a local expression of this new people as they live in community. As a church we live as an expression of God’s character and way, and together we call others into this new relationship with God. Even before God created the world, He already existed in and of Himself as a community of persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Bible tells us that we bear the image of God; living in community with one another is one of the ways we reflect God’s own nature.
Everything we do as a church, from our collective worship and teaching on Sundays, to our care for the poor of Winnipeg (see Social Action), or our engagement with University students on campus (see Mission), is done in community. But the best way we have found to organize our community at Light is through our Light Communities; groups which are similar to what other churches call “life groups” or “small groups”. These are groups of Christians who “do life” together, which means getting together at various times throughout the week for worship, prayer, teaching, as well as answering questions, discussing the Christian journey with one another, and helping one another to live out what God has called us to. We encourage members, within their Light Communities, to “come along side” one another and support each other in reaching their co-workers, neighbours and other non-Christian friends with the message of the Gospel.
